Being granted a Preferred Start means starting your race immediately behind the Elite field. To be granted a preferred start you must have achieved the following qualifying times for your event since 1st January 2025. Applications for a preferred start will be closing on the 12th September 2026.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.  All applications are checked to guarantee times submitted are valid.

How will I know if I’ve been successful or unsuccessful in applying for a Preferred Start?

  • All applicants will be emailed a response according to the schedule below.
Batch 1 Received by 2nd May Confirmation sent by 6th May
Batch 2 Received by 27th July Confirmation sent by 31st July
Batch 3 Received by 14th September Confirmation sent by 18th September
I ran a performance standard earlier in the qualifying period but ran slower in a recent race.  Does this mean I will be refused a Preferred Start?
  • No.  Anyone who has run the standard for a Preferred Start in the qualifying period will get one irrespective of other performances
I haven’t run this distance before.  Can I use a valid performance at another distance to get a Preferred Start.
  • Yes. Performances over other relevant distances will be taken into consideration
I submitted an application for a Preferred Start a while ago but haven’t entered the race yet.  Why haven’t I heard if I’m successful?
  • You will only be contacted about your Preferred Start application after you have actually entered your event of choice
