At this year’s Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival, we’re proud to share that together, we prevented 3,212 kilograms of textiles from ending up in Australia’s landfill through our partnership with UPPAREL and their innovative onshore recovery and recycling initiative.
Throughout the event weekend, UPPAREL collected discarded clothing and textiles from runners at the event precinct and starting line, giving these items a second life through their specialised recycling process. Instead of being sent to landfill, these materials are now being repurposed, recycled, or reused.
This effort didn’t just save space in landfill, it also had a major environmental impact. By preventing those textiles from being dumped, we stopped over 11,242 kilograms of greenhouse gases from entering our atmosphere
And with the help of our incredible community of runners, partners, and volunteers, we’re continuing to make the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival a more sustainable event each year.
